Michel Kazatchkine, Executive Director of The Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, has decided to step down in mid-March after leading the organization for five years, during which time he oversaw a dramatic expansion in the organization’s life-saving work. Concurrently The Global Fund announced it has appointed Gabriel Jaramillo as General Manager, a newly created position intended to oversee a process of transformation as The Fund accelerates the fight against the three pandemics by focusing on its management of risk and grants.
“GBCHealth has enjoyed a rich and productive relationship with The Global Fund under Michel’s leadership,” said John Tedstrom, President and CEO of GBCHealth, which serves as the Focal Point for the Private Sector Delegation (PSD) on the Board of the Fund. “We thank him for his vision, leadership and tireless service on behalf of those in need.”
Mr. Jaramillo, a former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sovereign Bank comes to this new position with more than 35 years of experience in executive positions in the financial sector, where he won broad recognition as a highly skilled leader and administrator with impeccable integrity. “We look forward to supporting the efforts of Gabriel Jaramillo and to ensuring that the private sector maintains its strong commitment to the work of The Fund,” continued Tedstrom.
The lives of millions of people depend on the continued success of the Global Fund and its programs. Promising trends in HIV, TB and malaria control are now leading to healthier communities and contributing to wealthier economies. A retreat from funding at this time would carry unacceptable costs, not only in greater financial requirements later to make up for lost ground, but also in terms of lives lost now. As the Global Fund pursues its reforms, the donor community must ensure sufficient funding to meet fully today's very real and urgent needs. The private sector, through GBCHealth and our member companies, will examine ways to enhance its impact through: making cash contributions; helping increase the efficiency and efficacy of management and financial systems; delivering goods and services; and strengthening the governance process.
GBCHealth’s Anna Thompson-Quaye, in her role as PSD Focal Point, works hand in hand with private sector Board and Alternate Board members –presently Dr. Brian Brink of Anglo American plc and Ms. Renuka Gadde of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) – supporting their work with the Global Fund and its Board of Directors. Along with PSD members, this group of representatives from the private sector helps steer the Fund’s priorities and policies, while also ensuring Global Fund initiatives actively engage the business sector.
